This list helps ID thieves clean their records. It lists the actions that most victims of identity theft should take to limit the damage caused by thieves. Report to the three credit bureau fraud
You can report identity theft to all three major credit bureaus by dialing the free fraud number below. You will arrive at an automated telephone system where you will not be able to talk to anyone at the moment. You will be asked to enter your social security number and other information to identify you. This automated system allows you to mark your files with fraud alerts in all three offices. This helps prevent thieves from opening new accounts on your behalf. Alert for 90 days. Each credit bureau will send you a letter confirming your fraud alert and provide instructions on how to get a copy of your credit report. As a victim of identity theft, you will not be sued for these reports. Each report you receive will include a phone number that you can call to contact one of the Credit Bureau fraud departments.

Report to the police
Under California law, you can report identity theft to your local police department.1 Ask the police to issue a police report on identity theft. Provide the police with as much information as possible about theft. One way is to provide a copy of the credit report showing items related to identity theft. Prohibit other items not related to identity theft. Provide the police with new evidence that you have collected to add to your report. Be sure to get a copy of your police report. You will need to copy to creditors and credit bureau. For more information, see “Identity theft cases” in the Identity Theft Resource Center at http://www.idtheftcenter.org/Fact-Sheets/fs106.html.
Request information about fraudulent accounts
When you file a police report about identity theft, officials may give you some forms to request account information from credit authorizers, utility companies, or cell phone service companies. If officials do not do this, you can use our Consumer Information Form 3A: Information on fraudulent accounts. When you write to a creditor who opens an account or applies for an account, please send a copy of the form and a copy of the police report. Provide the information you receive from creditors to officials investigating your case.
Call creditors
Call the creditor to steal the thief’s account. Call the security department or fraud department when you call. Examples of creditors are credit card companies, other lenders, telephone companies, other utility companies and department stores. Tell them you are the victim of identity theft. Please do not let them in charge of the new account opened by thieves.
If your existing credit account is fraudulent, ask the credit issuer to close these accounts and report it to the credit bureau in accordance with the “Closed at Consumer’s request”. If you open a new account, please set a password or PIN approved for use. Do not use your mother’s premarital or social security number as the last four digits of your password. Ask the creditor to provide a copy of the document about the fraudulent account (see above clause). Check your credit report carefully
When you receive your credit report, read it carefully. Find accounts you do not know. Look in the Queries section for the name of the creditor for which you did not apply for credit. You may find something called a “promotion.” These problems occur when a company gets your name and address from the credit bureau and sends it to you Provide credit Promotional inquiries are not signs of fraud. (By calling Identity Piracy, your name is automatically deleted from the mailing list to receive such unsolicited credit quotes.) Also, as a general precaution, check the Personal Information section to verify your social security number, Address, and name.
If you find anything you do not understand, call the credit bureau at the phone number listed in the report. Tell them you want to block or delete any information from the report of identity theft. (You must send a police report of your identity theft to support this request.) Use an ID theft affidavit
Creditors may ask you to fill in an affidavit of fraud. The FTC’s affidavit of affidavit was accepted by credit bureaus and most major creditors. Send a copy of the completed form to the thief who opened an account on your behalf. It is also possible to send a copy to the thief who charges your credit bureau, creditors and police on your account. This form can be found on the FTC website at ww.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/resources/forms/affidavit.pdf. Submit identity theft complaint to FTC. Visit their website at www.consumer.gov/idtheft The FTC maintains a database of identity theft cases used by many law enforcement agencies.
Write credit bureau
Write to each credit bureau. Repeat what you said on the phone (see above). Send a copy of your police report and complete an affidavit of identity theft. Remind the credit bureau that they must block or delete any information you say as a victim of identity theft, as a result of theft. Sending your letter by certified mail, requesting a return receipt. Keep a copy of each letter. See the credit department sample letter on page 7.

Request additional free credit report
Police reports of the identity theft in California as a victim of identity theft are entitled to 12 free credit reports, received monthly in the 12-month period following the police report date. The procedure for requesting a free monthly report is different for each credit bureau.
Experian: Make a request to receive all free monthly reports. Mail your request to Experian PO Box 9554, Allen, TX 75013. Attach a copy of the Identity Theft Police Report, a copy of a government-issued ID card (such as a driver’s license, state or military ID card), and a copy of the current mailing address Single, bank or insurance display name, current mailing address and date of issue). Also provide your full name, including the middle name (eg Jr., Sr., II, III, etc.), the address two years prior, the Social Security number and the date of birth.
TransUnion: Write or call your request monthly. Mail to TransUnion, P. O. Box 6790, Fullerton, CA 92834. Or call the toll-free number printed on the most recent TransUnion Credit Report. Provide the full name, including the middle name (eg Jr., Sr., II, III), social security number, date of birth and proof of residence (eg utility bill or bank statement).
Equifax: Write or call your request monthly. Mail to Equifax Fraud Department, P.O. Atlanta, GA 30374, Block 740250 or call the toll-free number printed on the most recent Equifax Credit Report.
Write to creditors
Write a letter to each creditor who opened or used your account on your behalf. Repeat what you say on the phone. Send a copy of your police report. Delete and send the account numbers of other creditors’ accounts on your completed copy of your identity card.
Consider freezing credit
The strongest protection for opening a new account on your behalf is a credit freeze, also known as a security freeze. Freezing means that your documents cannot be shared with potential creditors, insurers, employers or homeowners without your permission. If your debit card or number is stolen
Debit card is a debit card with a credit card logo. It accesses funds directly from your bank account, with legal protection different from credit cards. If your debit card is stolen, call your bank immediately and cancel the card. The bank will send you a new debit card, your checking account number will not change. However, when your bank investigates the matter, the stolen money will disappear. If you call the bank within two business days of a fraudulent transaction, your liability is limited to $ 50. Over time, your fraud accountability is on the rise. If you wait more than 60 business days after your bank sends a fraudulent transaction to a bill, you may lose all of the fraud amounts.
If your check, ATM card or bank account information is lost or stolen
Call Bank and close your bank account. Open a new account with a new one. Tell the bank that you want to access your new account with a new password. Do not use the last four digits of your mother’s maiden name or social security number. Ask your bank to notify the checking company that it uses. Report a stolen check to a check verification company used in a retail store. You can also contact the major check verification company. Retailers that require them to inform their database do not accept checks on your closed account. Call TeleCheck at 1-800-710-9898 and Certegy, Inc. at 1-800-437-5120. To find out if identity theft passed a nominal error check, contact SCAN at 1-800-262-7771. Follow up write letter to your bank. Sending your letter by certified mail, requesting a return receipt.
If you are contacted by a debt collector …
Tell a debt collector you are a victim of identity theft. Say you challenged the validity of your debt. Say you did not create debt, irresponsible. Send a follow-up letter to the collector and say the same thing. Including a copy of your police report and any documents received from creditors. In your letter, state that you are being informed of the existence of identity theft by the State under section 1798.93 (c) (5) of the California Civil Code. Send mail by certified mail, request receipt. If the debt collector is not the original creditor, be sure to send your letter within 30 days of receiving the payee first payment request.
If your driver’s license or ID card issued by DMV is stolen
Contact your local DMV office immediately to report the theft. Ask them to add a fraud alert on your license. Then call the free DMV fraud hotline 1-866-658-5758. If a thief uses your license as an ID, you may need to change your license number. Ask the DMV for an appointment. Take a copy of the police report and a copy of the bill or other articles that support your fraud statement. You also need to prove your identity. With current documents such as passports, citizenship or naturalization certificates, or U.S. military photo documents. When you meet all the requirements, the DMV will issue a new permit or ID number.
If your email is stolen or your address is changed by identity thief …
If you believe an identity theft has misapplied your mail or request a change of address on your behalf, please notify the postal censor. To find the nearest postal inspector, check the white pages on the post office telephone directory under the U.S. government. Or visit the postal inspection service at www.usps.gov/websites/depart/inspect.
If you are wrongly accused of identity theft crime …
Crime Identity Theft is a specific type of identity theft tag. When a criminal suspect identifies himself with the identity of another innocent person, a criminal act takes place. A special database of the California Department of Justice can help victims of such identity theft. If someone uses your social security number to claim unemployment benefits or work …
If you suspect that someone is claiming unemployment benefits using your social security number, call the California Department of Employment’s free fraud hotline at 1-800-229-6297. For more information, visit their website at www.edd.ca.gov. Search for “fraud” on the site. Occasionally, identity thieves are eligible to work using the social security numbers of others. It is a good idea to check your social security revenue record to see if the thief’s earnings are credited to your account. You can call 1-800-772-1213 for a copy of your earnings history. Or request a Social Security Statement at www.ssa.gov/online/ssa-7004.html (Form 7004). If you think a thief is using your social security number to work or claim social security benefits, call the Social Security fraud hotline at 1-800-269-0271. Or report social security benefits fraud online at www.ssa.gov/oig/hotline/index.htm.

Despite other provisions under this heading, the maximum number of free reports that victims of identity theft is entitled to receive under this heading is 12 times per year, as set forth in this segment.
